The Natural Disaster No One Knows About
Three weeks ago, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake flattened the home of Lapun Petrus, 12, and most of the homes in his mountain village in Papua New Guinea.
Almost every day since then, aftershocks remind him of what happened. He's now sleeping on this foam mat, under a large plastic tarp with 60 other displaced people. Getting food and supplies to people like Lapun is difficult, possible only by helicopter until the damaged roads are repaired.
It troubles me that this disaster has been largely ignored by the media. Lapun is a sweet, smart kid -- and his life is on hold until his family gets the resources to rebuild. #png #pnghighlands #papuanewguinea #onassignment @unicef
